Frequently asked questions

What is carbon?

Carbon is nothing but carbon. Carbon is a substance found in nature (the chemical element 'C'). From this substance, fibers are made which are then woven into small mats. The density of the carbon fibers determines the subsequent stiffness of the finished product. At Toray, the largest manufacturer of carbon fibers and related products, they talk about T700, T800 and T900, among others, where the higher number indicates greater stiffness. To use these mats to make an object, such as carbon wheels, you place them in a prepared mold. The number of mats and how they are positioned determines the strength of your rim! By positioning them in a certain way, you need fewer mats and can thus save weight without compromising strength. Once in the mold, they are placed under a press and resin is injected under pressure. What type of resin you use also determines the quality of your final product! At ZIRRUZ we use an HTg resin that has been tried and tested for years, but is innovative in the cycling world. To complete the manufacturing process, the rims are placed in an oven to fuse the resin into the carbon and cure.
